Yoga for CHildren
I teach yoga classes for children, which is delightful and such a pleasure to do!
For younger ones (5-8) we practice yoga with songs and dancing and games. Even though it just feels like fun for the children, they are learning social skills as well as physical co-ordination, strength and flexibility, fine motor control, gross motor skills. Relaxation is a key element for every age group, and the meditation/visualisation during relaxation is an important aspect of each session for the children.
In the next age range (8-11) there is likely more of a focus on breathing, especially in order to help anxiety or worry and to find an inner calm; on fine-tuning the postures a little more, on building strength more consciously, on becoming aware of the body's limits and needs, on our strengths and weaknesses. Still we play games and have a lot of our focus on enjoying the yoga practice and the social skills development continues.
As the children get older the focus shifts a little to meeting more emotional and social needs through conversation, specific postures for specific purposes, practising yoga in order to alleviate anxiety, social issues such as bullying and social media can also be explored directly or indirectly, breath work (pranayama), and yoga postures, and meditation topics.
Please contact me if you are interested in setting up a yoga session at your school or in another setting. I look forward to exploring possibilities with you.
