General yoga class
The general class for 75 minutes is for people who want more of a challenge than the gentle yoga class. We work with a variety of lovely yoga postures, modifications and variations. Some postures are challenging, but can be adapted to suit your needs. The result is that you leave with a great feeling of satisfaction as you continue to improve and begin to find equanimity and release within the postures. People have commented that at the end of the class they notice that their tension or tightness has lessened, and the body feels a gentle tingling flow. They also say they sleep best on the nights after their yoga class!

The class atmosphere is warm, enabling, and friendly.
By regularly attending this class you can achieve both physical and deeper beneficial results.
Physical benefits
In the class we work on flexibility, physical tone, and strength. Regular yoga develops core strength – the muscles of the abdomen and lower back - which helps to improve posture and prevent/alleviate musculoskeletal and other problems. By getting the energy flowing the body feels as if it's working in a positive and healthy way. This is a great antidote to our modern lives where our muscles rarely get the full range of movement and engagement they were built to do. For a more complete list of benefits, see Maria's approach to yoga.
Deeper benefits
Yoga, especially if practiced regularly, leads to deeper benefits that can spill over into the rest of life. People begin to experience stillness, presence and balance. In time, this leads to greater patience and equanimity, and an ability to cope better with the stresses and strains of modern life. Ultimately yoga is a way to help foster self-awareness and can be a good way to prepare for meditation.
An overview of the class
After a warm welcome, the class starts with loosening up the joints and muscles so that both you and your body are ready and able to get the most out of your yoga practice.
The middle part of the class involves engaging in postures that help to develop flexibility, strength, good posture, muscle tone, confidence, and balance. We focus on good alignment which can help alleviate or prevent future musculoskeletal problems. Students are always encouraged to go only as far as they feel happy with and to never to strain or over-exert themselves. Throughout the class focus will be brought to breathing and time may be spent on specific breathing practices, called pranayama.
The sessions end with a short period of relaxation in a final posture called savasana. This is an opportunity to completely relax, allowing your body time to absorb all the movements and efforts made during the class. This is probably the most important posture of all – and the most appreciated by students!
